Restorations That Look & Act Like Real Teeth
If you’re one of over 178 million Americans that have experienced tooth loss, you know the pain it can bring. Missing teeth can make everyday activities like eating your favorite foods, speaking clearly, and smiling with confidence so much harder. Unfortunately, the downsides don’t end there. Untreated tooth loss also increases your likelihood of developing related health issues such as gum disease, misalignment, and even cardiovascular disease.
For reasons like these, replacing your missing teeth is imperative, but not every restoration will offer the full range of benefits. While dental bridges and dentures can offer relief and help restore the look of your smile, they don’t offer adequate protection against tooth loss-related health issues and often need to be regularly replaced. To fully restore your smile and protect your oral health for years to come, the skilled dentists at JB Dental Associates recommend dental implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are dental prosthetics made of three main components:
- The screw-like foundational post, which is often made of titanium
- The abutment, which connects your restoration piece to the foundation
- The custom-made restoration, which replaces your missing teeth
Unlike non-implant restorations, dental implants are surgically inserted into your jaw, where they fuse to the bone in a process called osseointegration. This essential process is what gives dental implants their superior durability and ability to actively prevent jawbone deterioration. Thanks to their unique design and their installation method, dental implants can offer you a full range of long-lasting health benefits.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
Stability – Because your implants fuse to your jawbone, your restorations have a sturdy foundation and won’t fall out of your mouth. This means you can eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
Lifelike Appearance – Your dental implants will be custom-made to look and act like your natural teeth so no one will notice the difference between your restorations and the rest of your smile.
Prevents Resorption – The posts of dental implants mimic the root of a natural tooth, so your body continues to receive signals to continuously regenerate jawbone density, preventing jawbone deterioration, also called resorption.
Protection Against Oral Disease – Much like real teeth, dental implants help prevent oral health issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, dental misalignment, and other tooth loss-related diseases.
Stain Resistance – Dental implants are often made of non-porous materials like porcelain, making it harder for them to stain and helping them stay pristine for years to come.
Permanence – Dental implants can last twenty years to a lifetime with proper oral hygiene and regular dental exams with one of the talented dentists at JB
Restore and Boost Your Confidence – The ability of dental implants to fully restore your smile with stable restorations can help return and raise your self-esteem, allowing you to smile with confidence and potentially improving your quality of life.
The Dental Implant Process
Before receiving your implants, you’ll undergo an initial consultation with one of the talented dentists at JB Dental Associates, where they’ll determine your candidacy for dental implants. During your consultation, your dentist will provide a thorough dental exam, review your medical history, and discuss your oral health goals with you.
If you’re prone to dental phobia or anxiety, you can also talk to your dentist about available sedation dentistry options that can help you relax during your procedure. If you’ve experienced loss of jawbone density or gum tissue recession, your dentist may recommend a supplemental procedure to increase your chances of implant success. JB Dental Associates offers gum grafting, bone grafting, sinus augmentation, and other supplemental procedures to help prepare your mouth for implants.
Dental Implant Design
Once you and your dentist have both decided that dental implants are the right treatment for you, we’ll take images and impressions of your teeth. These images and impressions will be sent to a special lab where they will serve as the blueprints for your custom-made dental implants.
Installing Your Implants
Your complete restorations will be installed in two stages. In the first stage, your dentist will install the foundational posts. Before the procedure begins, we’ll clean your mouth out and apply a local anesthetic. Depending on the sedation dentistry option you and your dentist have agreed upon, we’ll either apply it ourselves or make sure it was applied properly before you arrived.
Once we’ve ensured that your anesthetic and sedative are working, your dentist will drill small holes into your gums. Then, your implant posts will be inserted into these holes. You’ll return to our Sterling, VA office to have your permanent restorations installed once osseointegration is complete, a process that usually takes three to six months. This time frame can vary depending on your body’s unique healing processes and how well you follow any care instructions.
Installing Your Dental Implant Restorations
Once osseointegration is complete, you’ll return to JB Dental Associates for the second stage of installation, and have your permanent restorations installed. Your restoration will be attached to the posts with the abutment piece. Afterwards, you’ll be able to leave our Sterling, VA office with your brand-new, fully restored smile.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I maintain my dental implants?
Your dental implants are made to be sturdy, but they need proper care and maintenance to last as long as possible. The dentists at JB Dental Associates offer this advice for maintaining your dental implants:
- Practice Proper Oral Hygiene: Brushing at least twice a day, flossing at least once daily, and rinsing with mouthwash between meals can help prevent plaque and bacteria from building up around your implant, which will help your whole mouth stay healthy.
- Avoid tobacco products: Using tobacco products can contribute to implant failure by weakening your bone structure and causing gum tissue to recede.
- Attend Regular Dental Appointments: Our dentists can regularly check to make sure your implant is in good condition, and they can help clean plaque from the places in your mouth that regular brushing and flossing cannot reach.
- Avoid Chewing Hard Foods: Chewing on things like ice and hard candy can break your implant as well as your natural teeth.
What is the cost of dental implants?
The cost of your dental implants will vary based on a number of factors such as your level of oral health, how many implants you need, the kind of implants you receive, and your insurance. Be sure to call your insurance provider beforehand and ask them if they will cover some or all of the costs of your dental implant procedure.
We accept many different kinds of coverage including Aetna™, Anthem®, and BlueShield®. To help make treatment more affordable, JB Dental Associates also offers an in-office membership plan and third-party financing through CareCredit.
Do I qualify for dental implants?
Advancements in dental technology mean more people than ever can qualify for dental implants. You may qualify for dental implants if:
- You’re missing one or more teeth
- You want permanent replacements for your teeth
- You want to protect yourself against tooth loss-related oral health issues
- You have sufficient jawbone density and gum tissue
- You qualify for a supplemental procedure to fix gum recession, jawbone resorption, or other issues that lower implant candidacy
- You’re committed to regular practicing proper oral hygiene and attending bi-annual dental exams at JB Dental and Associates
What’s the success rate of dental implants?
Dental implants have a high success rate ranging from 95 to 98 percent and complications from dental implants are rare and usually easy to treat. Your dentists will make sure to rigorously evaluate your oral health, determine what oral health issues you have that may lower your chances of implant success, and let you know all of your restoration options so you can make an informed, healthy decision.
